Higher institutions in the U.S. command strong aspiration among international graduate students. American graduate schools received more than 785,000 applications from international students in fall 2015, nearly a quarter of all new graduate students, according to the data released by the Council of Graduate Schools.
International graduate student enrollment reached a total of 504,289 in March 2016 —an increase of 100,000 students as compared to March 2014, according to the “SEVIS by the Numbers.”
However, the increasing number of international students at many American campuses has triggered new challenges and increased expectations for support services.
When it comes to international students, diversity of cultural assumptions and preparedness further complicates their student experience. Often international offices have to focus on providing services for immigration compliance, and the majority of the campus staff is not geared up to work with a diverse international population.
At the NAGAP annual conference in Nashville, TN, Rahul Choudaha invited the following three panelists to discuss challenges and their approaches in supporting international student success that goes beyond recruitment and admissions.
